The David and Lucile Packard Foundation, one of the largest U.S. grantmaking foundations ranked according to its market value of assets, has awarded a huge amount of grant this year to a Washington D.C.-based nonprofit organization.
The grant recipient, Center for Public Integrity, aims to produce original investigative journalism about significant public issues to make institutional power more transparent and accountable. Specifically, the program for an investigative report on black market fisheries along the Pacific Rim under the foundation’s program area of Conservation and Science, is aligned with the center’s focus.
A ‘black market’ is a market in goods or services that operates outside the formal one(s) supported by established state power. In a simpler term, it refers to an illegal market.
This funding only proves that the support given by the Packard Foundation was because of the belief that the investigations of the Center for Public Integrity are non-partisan, just, and capable of raising the level of debate on complex matters of critical, global importance.
Center for Public Integrity maintains a strict firewall between funding and their editorial content. It means that this funding will not affect in any way on the transparency and comprehensive reporting.
